Vancouver to the mountains
Getting to Whistler
About 120 km, about two hours, and what to know in winter.
Home › Getting to Whistler
Whistler is about 120 km north of Vancouver on Highway 99, the Sea to Sky Highway, and Tourism Whistler calls it a two-hour drive. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the main airport for visitors. This guide covers the road, the shuttles, flying in and getting around once you arrive.

By car from Vancouver or YVR
- From downtown Vancouver: Tourism Whistler’s directions cross the Lions Gate Bridge into West Vancouver, take Route 1 to Exit 2, then Highway 99 north through Squamish to Whistler Village.
- From YVR: Whistler Blackcomb says YVR is roughly two hours from Whistler. Tourism Whistler’s air page puts it about 135 km away, at 2 to 2.5 hours by Highway 99.
- Distances differ a little between official pages (from about 115 to 140 km, depending on the start point). Treat any figure as approximate.
- Tourism Whistler says Friday afternoons and evenings, weekends and holidays are the busiest times on the highway, and midweek is quieter.
Winter driving on Highway 99
- Winter tires: Tourism Whistler says they are required on the Sea to Sky Highway from October 1 to March 31, and that requirements “may change without notice.” Some BC highways run to April 30; this guide could not confirm whether that applies to Highway 99, so check the Province’s winter tire page.
- Checks: Whistler Blackcomb says West Vancouver Police and Sea-to-Sky Traffic Services do random checks at the Alice Lake turn-off. Vehicles without compliant tires “must carry chains and fit them at the checkpoint, or they will be turned back.”
- What counts: A 2021 BC Government release says the tire must carry the M+S symbol or the mountain/snowflake symbol, with at least 3.5 mm of tread, and gave a $121 fine. That release is dated, so confirm today’s rule.
- Live conditions: Tourism Whistler links DriveBC’s Highway 99 page and cameras, and @DriveBC on X. This guide could not confirm current closure or avalanche-control information, so check DriveBC before you go.
From Calgary and Alberta
None of the Tourism Whistler, Whistler Blackcomb or DriveBC pages reviewed gives a driving distance or time from Calgary, so this guide does not quote one. Tourism Whistler names YVR as the main airport and lists a non-stop Calgary–Vancouver flight of about 1.5 hours. It lists Seattle–Tacoma (about 375 km, 4.5 to 5 hours’ drive) and Bellingham (about 206 km, 2.5 to 3 hours’ drive) as alternatives. If you plan to drive from Alberta, check DriveBC for every highway on your route, especially between October and March.

By air
- Whistler has no commercial airport; helicopter and floatplane are the direct air options, and both depend on weather.
- Floatplane: Tourism Whistler lists a scheduled Harbour Air flight from Vancouver Harbour, about 45 minutes, running May through September (its page header says October), from $243 for an adult.
- Helicopter: charter only, year round, about 30 minutes, listed at $5,850 plus tax per helicopter each way.
Getting around once you’re here
